PUR Mints 8/10

Because I seem to have started a personal trend of reviewing healthy alternative foods, it only seems appropriate that I add another to the list. Like I usually say when it comes to products to things like this, it’s probably not something you’d go out of your way to buy unless you don’t have many (or any) other options; meant for a niche market, but if there’s demand for it somebody will make it and people will buy it. This is a perfect example, mints made without aspartame.

While the market for gum without aspartame seems to have spread and begun to include larger companies (like Orbit) it seems like major mint brands have been lagging a little behind. The more I think about it, the more I realize why this product has been restricted to smaller mint brands, there aren’t many large ones. Yes there are some exceptions, but it seems to be a market shared more by many smaller companies, which is something I like to see.

You’ve probably never heard of PUR mints before (they make gum too for the record), but again, they’re a company that makes a product for those who don’t have any other options.

Whether you have an aspartame allergy, or are just looking for a natural option, PUR mints don’t sacrifice taste by changing ingredients; in fact it seems to be quite the opposite. Not only do the mint flavors seem to be ‘mintier’ than other brands, the more exotic flavors like mojito lime pack a truly intense taste. It’s like somebody thought up how they wanted it to taste, and somehow perfectly delivered what they had imagined.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the 5 flavors I tried

Unfortunately I’m at a loss for words when trying to describe spearmint, and peppermint. It’s the sort of thing where if you’ve tried these flavors before you basically know how they taste. Now just imagine a little sweeter (but definitely not too sweet) and a little more intense.

Then there’s polar mint which I can only describe as somewhat close to peppermint, but not quite. It’s a stronger mint flavor without the subtle sweetness mentioned above.

Mojito lime mint would be more accurately described as sweet lime in my opinion, because it’s basically that. A sweet limey flavor.

Finally, tangerine tango. Similar to mojito mint, it’s very sweet. I know it probably sounds weird, but it’s a perfect balance of the tangerine flavor. Not too intense, and not too subtle, it really just tastes great

All in all, while I personally wouldn’t have actively sought out aspartame free mints, I can say if I stumbled upon these in a store now I would probably buy them over most other brands. They really are just very good and I recommend them
